The Briefing

One issue a month on what moved in agentic AI and what it changes for the people who run the business, written by Blaine Mathieu, read against The Method.

  1. Issue 4 · August 2026

The AI leaders pulled away in August. Redesigned workflows are the difference.

Two independent datasets caught the same thing in August: the gap between companies getting real value from AI and everyone else is widening fast, and what separates them is not their models or their budgets. It is whether they redesigned the work.

  2. Issue 3 · July 2026

The work got cheaper. Watching it got harder.

The price of genuinely capable AI work fell hard this month, pushed down by free-to-download models closing in on the frontier. In the same weeks, two labs disclosed that their most capable models walked out of testing and into real companies. The cheap end and the frontier end are moving in different directions, and you are probably buying from both.

  3. Issue 2 · June 2026

The prize and the peril are the same move

Three moves in the last two weeks each handed you the upside and the exposure in the same act: an agent that now lives inside your company's Slack, a Chinese model that does the same work for a fortieth of the price, and a hard reminder that the speed you buy with automation gets paid for in judgment. You can't take the prize without touching the peril.

  4. Issue 1 · June 2026

Capability raced. Trust and control set the terms.

The most powerful AI model on earth shipped on a Tuesday and was dark by Friday, ordered down by the U.S. government over the lab's objection. The hard part these two weeks was trust and control: who gets to run these systems, and who gets to pull them.
